Complete Blood Count is more commonly known as CBC. CBC test measures various different components and features of the blood. It is one of the routine blood test to be included in regular health checkups. Blood is composed of blood cells suspended in yellow colored plasma.
Different components of the blood measured in CBC test include:
- Red blood cells (RBCs): Red Blood cells carry oxygen from lungs to other parts of the body. These are the most abundant blood cells.
- White Blood Cells (WBCs): White Blood cells are main line of defense of the body. These are the cells responsible for fighting infections. There are various different types of WBCs present in the blood namely Neutrophils, Basophils, Eosinophils, Lymphocytes and Monocytes. A CBC with differential count gives the quantity of individual type of WBC.
- Hemoglobin (Hb): Hemoglobin is part of Red Blood Cells. This protein is mainly responsible for carrying oxygen to different parts of the body.
- Platelets: Primary role of platelet is to help the clotting of the blood and prevent excessive bleeding.
- Hematocrit: Hematocrit is ratio of Red blood cells versus fluid/liquid component of the blood, also known as plasma.
- Mean corpuscular volume (MCV): This is the average size of your red blood cells. If RBCs are bigger than usual, MCV will be higher.

Any changes in the body from as minor as small infection or as major as immune disorder or even cancer, first triggers the changes in the various components of the blood. Hence, routine Complete Blood Count (CBC) test can identify these slight variations which will help your doctor in diagnosing underlying health condition.
If you are already suffering from any medical condition, then doing Complete Blood test will help track your progress on the treatment and indicate any additional concerns if any.
Hence, routine CBC test is essential to monitor your health and progress on existing medical regimen..
